MAPLE
Maple trees are well known as ornamental trees and they also provide a key component of the natural ecosystem in forests.
More than one in five species of Maple are threatened with extinction. A shocking new report has revealed that 75% of threatened species are “geographically restricted” in their native regions.
Maple trees in cities become victims of air and water pollution, road salts, and construction and landscaping injuries. In the countryside, trees can be completely defoliated by insects and putting in a fresh stream of leaves consumes valuable energy resources. Without energy reserves, trees are vulnerable to decline.
This shows that more than a third of Maple species are facing habitat loss as a result of urban development and increased agriculture, while logging is also a major threat.
