PAU BRASIL
Pau Brasil is the national tree of Brazil. This specie is found only in some remnants of the Atlantic Forest, where it provides mportant habitat for orchids and other epiphytes.
This tree also played a significant role in Brazil's social and economic history. In addition to dye, taken from the heart of the tree, it also provides an immensely valuable, almost indestructible wood used in making bows for stringed instruments, in building construction, and in making hunting instruments.
It is believed that the bark of the tree may have medicinal properties and has been tested as a possible treatment for cancer.
Pau Brasil is on the official list of Brazilian plants threatened with extinction by IBAMA, and there is currently a program for the reintroduction of Brazil wood in the Linareas Reserve.
